Getting to know you
I was away for quite a while and am now back. I used to know everyone on here and I am feeling a little lost and like a stranger.
To help me get to know you better would you post a few things about yourself?
1. Where do you live? What do you like best about where you live and what do you like worst.
2. Tell me a little bit about your family.
3. What have been your biggest challenges since you started your journey?
4. What have been your biggest reward or aha moments?
Here is about me:
I live in Blue Springs Missour which is a suburb of Kansas City. I am an ICU nurse who travels 40 minutes into Kansas City for work. I have been a critical care nurse for 33 years now. Wow, I am old.
I live with my wonderful husband of 33 years who has supported me whatever my weigh challenges have been. The sweetie kept telling me I wasn't fat and I think he believed it himself. After I lost weight he saw a picture and haltingly told me I had been right, he just hadn't been able to see it. I have a 29 year old daughter who lives in Chicago with her husband and 20 month old son. She is expecting a girl in June. Those grandkids are the highlight of my life. I just wish they were closer to me. We plan to retire to Chicago in about 11 years.
The biggest challenge for me has been that my hunger levels are about the same as they were before surgery. I never experienced ANY trouble eating ANY kind of food. That coupled with a gigantic pouch has really made me rely too heavily on weak will power.
The biggest rewards have been little things like crossing my legs, sitting comfortably in an airplane seat and bending over to tie my shoes without gasping for breath. The biggest accomplishement was completing a half marathon.
Thanks for letting me know a little bit more about each of you.
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
We do have a lot of new people on the board. This is a great thing to do.
1. Where do you live? What do you like best about where you live and what do you like worst.
I live in a very small town in Southwest Georgia. I like that it is small and pretty much everyone knows everyone - that is also what I like the least-LOL. Sometimes it takes forever to get out of Walmart because of seeing everyone you know.
2. Tell me a little bit about your family. My husband and I have been married for 33 years. We have a daughter who is married and has a 3 year old daughter. We have a son who is married and has 3 year old daughter. Two granddaughters born within a week of each other - that was interesting. They are my life now - grandkids are the best!! My kids both live within 30-40 minutes of us. Close enough that we can see them whenever we want which is wonderful.
3. What have been your biggest challenges since you started your journey? I guess my biggest challenge has been to exercise consistently. I will do good for a couple of months, then stop, then start back. I enjoy it, I just get out of the habit. Overall my experience has been wonderful - no real problems once I got on a schedule and stuck with it.
4. What have been your biggest reward or aha moments? I loved when I could first cross my legs. I now love to shop - I have to be careful because I could spend lots of money! I am thrilled that I can now get in the floor and play with my granddaughters. One of the things I'm proudest of was doing the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta last July 4th, I walked it but I finished it. I plan on signing up for it this year and trying to jog most of it if I get in the lottery. I've done several 5K's around here and enjoy them, I just need to prepare a little better.
Linda

To help me get to know you better would you post a few things about yourself?
1. Where do you live? What do you like best about where you live and what do you like worst.
I live in Portland, Oregon. I've lived here for over 30 years but I am originally from Los Angeles. I'm glad I live here now because as I get older I tolerate heat a lot less and most of the time it's cooler here, but not too cold. I find it is easier to warm up then it is to cool down. On the other hand, one of the things I don't like is the amount of rain. Some rain is okay but 9 months out of the year? Come on.
2. Tell me a little bit about your family.
I am single with 5 kids, 4 of whom are grown and on their own. The youngest, a 16 year old girl, is driving me crazy and I am counting the minutes until her 18th birthday (465 days). I have 4 beautiful grand daughters who are my heart and a new grand baby (hoping for a boy!) we just found out about.
3. What have been your biggest challenges since you started your journey?
I have to say exercise is the hardest, especially to stay consistent with. I am also one of the rare people who has lost too much weight (Yeah, I know, cry me a river) and I am struggling to regain to a healthier weight without resorting to bad habits and avoiding bad carbs).
4. What have been your biggest reward or aha moments?
The times I have been able to exercise for any length of time always amazes me because before my revision nearly 20 months ago I was so sick I could barely shower and dress. I was incapable of working or doing much of anything. Now I am taking online classes and doing all kinds of things to take care of my physical and mental health and prepare myself to go back to work.

1. Where do you live? What do you like best about where you live and what do you like worst.
I live in Western North Carolina at the base of the mountains. I love the country and the fact that although we have 4 seasons, they are relatively mild. The worse are the extremes in the summer and winter, although we didn't have any winter this year.
+
2. Tell me a little bit about your family.
I'm married, for 40 yrs this December. We have 2 grown children, a daughter that is a college professor and single and a son who is IDD and lives in a local group home during the week but spends the weekends home with us.
3. What have been your biggest challenges since you started your journey?
I really haven't had many challenges related to WLS. I have had no complications, no stalls, no dumping. My major challenge has been my knee replacement which has taken forever to recover from and has been so much harder than my RNY ever thought about being.
4. What have been your biggest reward or aha moments?
Being more active was the best until I had my knee surgery then it all when south. I am coming back finally and look forward to a busier spring. I love all my cute new clothes, being able to share clothes with my daughter and all the compliments. A great AHA moment was today when my PCP said I was "just a normal healthy person now" with no other diagnosis. Woohoo.

I live in Hollywood, Fl. I'm married for five years and retired for two. I was a special education teacher for 32 years but now I have my own company teaching life skills to disabled youth and young adults. I love being able to go to the beach or eat outside at local restaurants. But I hate the heat and miss the seasons!
My adopted daughter is going to be 22 next week. She struggles with bipolar disorder and PTSD. My stepdaughter is 29 and got married two years ago. We just found out we are going to be grandparents. Yeah! My husband is the best and if I could teach him not leave piles of papers all over the house he would be perfect! LOL
No medical issues at all since the surgery. Still fight with emotional eating and being hungry all the time. I finally got a handle on getting in enough protein but still fall short on drinking fluids and exercising. Hey, I figure I'm a work in progress!
Im still amazed that I can physically do so much without even thinking about it and I rarely wonder if other people see me as fat anymore. In fact I sometimes forget to appreciate everything I can do since it comes so easily now!

1. Where do you live? What do you like best about where you live and what do you like worst.
I live in northern Virginia. I like that there are so many people from so many different backgrounds and nationalities, but OMG, the traffic is awful.
2. Tell me a little bit about your family.
My hubby and I have been married for 31 years and we have 2 grown sons, 1 DIL and 2 grandbabies.
3. What have been your biggest challenges since you started your journey?
Taking all the vitamins all the time. Keeping my nighttime gas issues under control. I make it all work but it takes effort on my part.
4. What have been your biggest reward or aha moments?
Pain in my back is mostly gone. No more diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pain in my feet, or sleep apnea. I can shop for clothes nearly everywhere and they have my size.
